On April 26, 2010, Assistance League of Houston held its annual Awards Day and Continental Breakfast at the Assistance League of Houston building. Scholarships recipients from Spring Branch ISD, The Briarwood School, Houston Community Colleges' VAST Program, Sharpstown High School and Yes Prep attended along with their families, counselors and principals. Assistance League of Houston will award more than $77,000 to fifty-five students this year. We congratulate them for their academic achievement and wish them well as they pursue their educational goals.
Assistance League of Houston members first began volunteering as classroom aides when The Briarwood School began with just two dedicated teachers and a few children in a church basement. Since that time, Briarwood has become a nationally acclaimed nonprofit institution offering quality education to children whose learning disadvantages range from mild disadvantages to severe autism. Since 1971, financial aid has been given to students who could not otherwise have afforded Briarwood's tuition costs. In 1984, the Assistance League Scholarship Program was established. At Briarwood, scholarships include tuition, two special merit scholarships and one special merit scholarship. In 2001, Assistance League of Houston-Naomi Cross Dempsey Scholarship was established. In 2008, Houston Community College's Vocational Advancement and Social Skills Training joined our Scholarship Program. The Scholarship Program has awarded more than $1.5 million in scholarships since its inception.
